Obama: Is he black?

Obama is a democratic front runner in the presidential election. He is often referred to as a black candidate. What's interesting to me is, he is actually bi-racial because his father was a black African and his mother was a white American, so he is half black and half white. But why do people say Obama is black? This has to do with the "one-drop theory" rooted in the old days of racial inequity and segregation when population is this country was divided into basically two racial groups: the white and the colored; and anyone with one drop of blood (i.e. blood of a black parent, or grandparent) was considered black. Now in this 21st century USA, why is Obama still considered black? Isn't the racist one-drop theory live and well? Obama is African-American, not black, not Afro-American, in my view, as I am Asian American.
Why do you think?
